intelppm.sys – Windows XP Virtual Machine Startup issues

I recently faced this issue…
Problem
Windows XP Virtual Machine starts up well in the safe mode + Network, but fails in the normal mode

Scenario

  1. Copied VM files running on powerful server machine to my desktop
  2. Copied the hard disk (.vdi) files to my desktop
  3. Created a Windows XP virtual machine on my desktop and mapped .vdi files
  4. Tried starting the vm, but it fails with a blue screen error stating
    1. intelppm.sys DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATIONS 0x000000CE

Work Around

  1. In the safe mode go to start->regedit.exe
  2. Go to, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm
  3. Change the ‘Start’ value to ‘4’
  4. Restart the server, it works!

Other Solutions on the Net

There are other solutions on the net, above work around worked for me. If it doesn’t work, try your luck with below solutions:

Alternate Solution 1:
  1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Processor, Change the ‘Start’ value to ‘4
Alternate Solution 2:
  1. F8 on startup
  2. Select boot in Safe Mode + Networking
  3. Go to %Systemroot%\Inf\ and delete all OEM#.inf
  4. Search for intelppm.sys in the %Systemroot% (search for hidden directories and system files)
  5. Delete the 3 results of intelppm.sys
  6. Reboot the OS normally
I found the alternate solutions here
Hope this helps
